Daring Bakers – Cinnamon Rolls

Help, I’ve eaten them all. Well apart from one or two which I sent to school with my daughter, but basically I have single-handedly scoffed them all. It’s all Marce’s fault. Marce is the blogger of Pip in the City who chose this month’s DB challenge – cinnamon rolls. Yeah, that’s exactly what I thought, and I was right. They were so delicious. And if that’s not enough of an incentive to model yourself on Miss Piggy, there’s something about the Daring Bakers build-up and the camaraderie that ensures the monthly bake-off is at the forefront of your mind 24/7.

I was so pleased to join the growing roll of DBers as I love to bake and I thought this would be a great excuse. But I failed to take into consideration the fact that vast amounts of sugar, butter and egg would be floating around my kitchen incessantly. But wait, that’s normal isn’t it? Yeah, okay, but I didn’t just make these once. I had to make them several times over the month, just to double check that I was doing it right. Everyone else’s had slight variations, or perhaps just better pictures. So I felt I really had no choice but to re bake, for quality control reasons. My daughter was ecstatic, I’m afraid to get on the scale!

The first batch, true to form, I decided to start at around 10pm one night and so finished at three or four in the morning, hence the awful photographs. Several of these were eaten hot in case they tasted different in the cold light of day. They did (warm baked goods are always at their best moments from the oven). Subsequent batches were eaten first and then photographed (oops!), or just eaten, I’m afraid. Still, I can almost guarantee I’ll be making these again. Perhaps I will remember to take decent pics before I sucumb to a sugar induced stupor.

Meanwhile, I get to display the funky logos and bask in the presence of baking greatness all around the world, and if you’d like to take a look at some of the other DBers posts check out the blogroll on my sidebar.

I’m looking forward to the next Daring Baker’s challenge, just as soon as I throw out my bathroom scales.

Calories from challenges dont count, so dont even think about them. Fantastic job, they look simply divine!

Congrats on getting the buns baked…and baked again..and again. Great buns, and admire the dedication!

  4. on 30 Sep 2007 at 2:31 pm Anne

Inge, no kidding – I made half the recipe to make sure I wouldn’t eat them all, ate one and promptly threw the rest into the freezer. Very proud of myself! :) Congratulations on your first challenge, so glad to have you in the group! :)

Slush, this is what I love about the community spirit of blogging. i never would have known about the calorie / challenge thing. I feel so much better now.

sheltie girl – scales are binned. I’ve been looking for an excuse. Besides, I don’t think they were working properly anyway…

annemarie thanks, these buns were great, mine not so great, but dedication takes sacrifice

Anne, I’ve just been looking at your buns. Baked in paper cases sounds a great idea for packed lunches. It’s nice to be in the group as it pushes me outside my comfort zone. Good to see familiar faces though.

    Your buns turned out great!

  7. on 30 Sep 2007 at 3:46 pm Hilda

They look so wonderfully plump and soft, I can see how you ate them all! mine weren’t even that good-looking and I kept scarfing them down. Congrats on your first challenge! welcome to the group!

jes and hilda, thank you so much. Being part of this group makes me feel as warm and fuzzy as polishing off all those buns did.

  9. on 30 Sep 2007 at 4:18 pm Tartelette

Oh! Those are really plump and gooey! Great job! Every DB challenge I know the scale tips the wrong way, but we have another 3 weeks to make up for it!!

Love how your buns turned out…and yes, no thinking about calories while eating these, they’re too good!

  11. on 30 Sep 2007 at 4:45 pm kellypea

I would have loved to have eaten all mine, but they were to enormous. My hips are thankful. And much respect to you for your determination in making them several times. I’m too lazy and wait until the last minute to cook, post, read others, and then wait anxiously for the next challenge. It’s a ritual now… Oh, and your photos are quite effective. Droolworthy!

What a very fine idea – just throw out the scales!
You are in fine company with those lovely looking buns Inge! Beautiful first challenge! Welcome aboard!

  13. on 30 Sep 2007 at 5:23 pm Belinda

Absolutely beautiful cinnamon rolls, Inge, well done! And it is really hard not to morph into Miss Piggy with all of the lusciousness of cinnamon buns tempting you, isn’t it?! :-) Let’s just forget about the scales, just for this weekend anyway!

  14. on 30 Sep 2007 at 5:44 pm Maryann

    They look great!

  15. on 30 Sep 2007 at 6:50 pm Marce

congrats on your first challenge! They look amazing and I´m delighted you enjoyed your first challenge… as much as I did, because I also had to make them twice (both varieties), and I say scales be damned, sometimes we need to try a few times to achieve perfection ;)
Welcome on board, let´s keep our fingers crossed for next month.

  16. on 30 Sep 2007 at 7:14 pm Jenny

Ha… I actually ended up throwing some out at my house, but not because they weren’t good. They just sat there PLEADING with us to eat them.

  17. on 30 Sep 2007 at 9:31 pm steph- whisk/spoon

yeah, definitely ditch the scales for this group! they came out great–good job!

  18. on 30 Sep 2007 at 9:52 pm Anh

    Beautiful!

  19. on 30 Sep 2007 at 10:30 pm Laura

I ate a large quantity of my buns too. I’m not surprised you wanted to keep all your beautiful buns to yourself!

  20. on 30 Sep 2007 at 11:13 pm thepassionatecook

welcome, welome, welcome, we’re joining at the same time! i had the same tough challenge: ate them pretty much single-mouthedly (if you see what I mean)… and shall be making them again soon!

  21. on 01 Oct 2007 at 1:09 am Andrea

Your photos are lovely! Welcome to the Daring Bakers!!

Like you, I was so, so tempted to make these multiple times this month, BUT I had a bridesmaid dress to fit into last weekend, and it was haunting my every thought. So now that the wedding is over…back to the sweets! ;)

  22. on 01 Oct 2007 at 3:58 am Dolores

I’ll confess I’ve never gotten started early enough in a month to make the DB challenge more than once. But I think this recipe is a definite repeater. I love your photographs… welcome and congratulations on your lovely buns!

  23. on 01 Oct 2007 at 6:38 am Pille

You’re so much better disciplined for making these several times over month. I simply didn’t have time, so I got up at 9am on Sunday morning (yep, the day of posting:) and started baking. Luckily everything turned out well, but it would have been tricky to make them twice in a day!!

  24. on 01 Oct 2007 at 11:40 am african vanielje

thank you all so much for your welcome and encouragement. I had fun and can’t wait to visit everyone else’s posts to check out their buns! Unfortunately major computer troubles are slowing me down, but I will be popping by as soon as I’m able. xxxx

Um, I guess we didn’t send you the secret decoder ring for the recipes yet huh?

There are no calories in challenge recipes! In fact, just the opposite, they take calories away ;-)

    Great job on your challenge!!

  26. on 01 Oct 2007 at 3:28 pm Gabi

Delightful post! Of course I add my vote to calories not being relevant to any DB challenge- Think of all the work you do that offsets them? :0

  27. on 01 Oct 2007 at 4:54 pm Deborah

Yes, I truly believe that to be a real Daring Baker, you MUST throw out the bathroom scale! Your buns look great!

  28. on 01 Oct 2007 at 9:21 pm Amanda at Little Foodies

Hey! You made them several times and didn’t send one to Surrey? I could make them again and again too. They were just delicious and as for the DB’ers and all their support. There are some truly lovely people who I wouldn’t have ‘met’ had I not become a DB.

  29. on 01 Oct 2007 at 9:21 pm Baking Soda

Dedication rulezz! And it’s a good thing to know that calories from challenges don’t count. Someone please tell my hips..

  30. on 02 Oct 2007 at 12:27 am wmpe

It does take a great act of will power to resist these rolls. I ate two hot out of the oven then two more the next day. Cinnamon rolls are a staple in my house and now with this great recipe I’ll bake them more often. Your rolls look great. Wendy

  31. on 02 Oct 2007 at 1:31 am Aoife

Those cinnamon rolls look seriously professional. I agree that they were best right out of the oven.

  32. on 02 Oct 2007 at 2:24 pm Julie

Mmm, this makes me think we should follow the muffin top’s suit and have bun tops.

  33. on 02 Oct 2007 at 11:28 pm Canadian Baker

I agree – these buns were heavenly straight out of the oven. Great job!

  34. on 03 Oct 2007 at 7:30 am The Cooking Ninja

They are gorgeous. :) I wish I’m having one right now for breakfast.

  35. on 04 Oct 2007 at 5:04 pm Lis

Sinful! They look absolutely sinful in the most wonderfully way possible!

    Welcome to the DB’ers, Inge!

Quite a testamonial that you ate them instead of making lots of photos…must have been spectacular buns! Don’t worry about the calories…it’s only once a month :)

  37. on 08 Oct 2007 at 4:19 am joey

Your buns look scrumptious! I know what you mean by wantng to taste them straight out of the oven…so goooood!

    Toss those scales out! ;)

  38. on 09 Oct 2007 at 3:58 pm Jeanne

OMG you are faaaaaar more dedicated (and braver & more daring!) than me. Well done and congrats on joining this elite group – those buns look awesome. I’ve always had a soft spot for spicy, sticky rolls…
