As little boys my brother and I were given tinned, mashed sardines on soldiers (long oblongs of toast, to the uninitiated!), after we had had our bath and came down to a roaring fire in the drawing room in our dressing gowns, while we had our hair rubbed dry. I still have them regularly and they are a true comfort food, evoking the care-free secure days of childhood.

I also like sardine sandwiches, and if given the choice between fresh or tinned, I prefer tinned. A childhood acquired taste, I imagine.

This is a favorite of my husband's. It's funny how the things we remember with the most fondness are the simple ones.

By the way, I love your new home. It looks great!
